We are reading "Stumbling on Happiness" by Daniel Gilbert. This is a LOL book. It has a quirky mix of humor and statistics. I recommend reading it even if you don't come to the AWC Book Club on Mar. 30 at Starbucks Coffee on Washtenaw - but I hope you do!

Dean Martha Pollack from U of M’s School of Information is going to speak on “Assistive Technology for People with Cognitive Impairment” – the same topic she spoke on for the U.S. Senate! Cash bar and hors d’oeuvres at 6:30pm, dinner at 7:15pm on Wed., Sept. 26. $30 AWC members, $40 non-members (become a member and save!). Logo Contest Winners

The voting is over and we have a winner, Kim Kachadoorian. As a matter of fact, Kim won first, second and third. She submitted six of the eight logos. Check out the winners, logos 1, 3 and 5, which by the way all tied.

SECOND-ANNUAL AWC-AA SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

The Association for Women in Computing Ann Arbor today announced the winners of its second annual scholarship program for women studying computers and engineering. Darlene Morin, vice president of the AWC Gala announced the winners:
*Randee Bierlein, of Okemos, Mich., studies computer science and engineering at Michigan State University
*Kathe Frassrand, from Ann Arbor, Mich., is working on a master’s in human computer interaction from the University of Michigan
*Jennifer Maertens, of Birmingham, Mich., attends the University of Michigan and is studying to become an electrical engineer
*Tanuka Roy, from Huntington Beach, Calif., is working toward a dual master’s degree from the University of Michigan in human computer interaction and business administration
About The Scholarship
The Ann Arbor chapter of the Association for Women in Computing awards scholarships through its AWC Scholarship Fund for Women in Computing, held at the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation. The scholarship recognizes outstanding women pursuing a career in a computer-related field.
To qualify, students must be female, attend an accredited Michigan institution of higher learning, and enrolled in computer or technology courses. Also, applicants must submit an essay about why they are pursuing a degree in technology, describes a completed computer related project and identifies a future tech trend.

Job Luck Club is back in full swing!

Aug. 22, 2005: We had a nice turnout at the August Job Luck Club meeting. Tina Watson, a hiring manager with ADP-Automatic Data Processing, spoke about the perspective of a hiring manager, networking, and interview preparation. Highlights of her discussion focused on the importance of certifications, planning your job search, networking, interview tips, recruiters, and how to use and not use the internet in your job search. The group picked up some valuable information to use in their job search, offering positive feedback about the meeting.

2005 Top MI Women in Computing Gala

The third annual Top Michigan Women in Computing Gala will be at the beautiful Fairlane Club in Dearborn Michigan on November 5th, 2005. Nominations are being accepted through June 1, 2005 at http://www.awc-aa.org/gala/nominee.php

The Ann Arbor AWC Top Women in Computing Awards Program honors and recognizes the roles that women play in IT and is the principle fundraising event for our Scholarship for Women in Computing.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating Technical Excellence.” Nominees must work in Michigan and should exhibit excellence in either (or both) of two areas: Outstanding scientific and technical achievement and/or Extraordinary service to the computing community through their accomplishments and contributions on behalf of women in computing. Women are judged based on Community Involvement, Education, Mentoring Activities, and Leadership Qualities.

MCIT Renews Sponsorship

Ann Arbor Advisory Board Set

Kudos to Petula Brown and Madhuri Deshpande for pulling together a stellar group of women for our newly formed advisory board. The Advisory Board, while having no legal or fiduciary responsibility for the organization, advises AWC Ann Arbor on matters concerning program development, partnership relations and strategic directions for the future. Members serve one-year terms and are expected to be active in attending an annual strategy-focused chapter meeting and advising via other media.

AWC On the Radio

Women in Computing is a regular feature on the weekly radio program: Michigan Technology News Today. The program feature airs once per month and highlights the accomplishment of women in computing, both historically and currently. AWC's Lisa Luczek is on the air with host Mike Brennan for a discussion of influential women and ideas. Tune in!

Michigan Technology News Today airs weekly in Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. LOGICACMG TO SPONSOR AWC-AA 2003 Gala

ANN ARBOR, MI - July 31, 2003 - The Association for Women in Computing (AWC) Ann Arbor chapter announced that LogicaCMG has joined its list of sponsors for the "Top Michigan Women in Computing" awards, to be held November 8, 2003 at the Sheraton Detroit-Novi (formerly the Novi Hilton). The gala will celebrate the 25th anniversary of AWC and recognize the leadership of women in the advancement of IT.

"LogicaCMG is sponsoring this event because it is imperative to recognize the contribution of women in IT," stated Sandy Moore, senior vice president of LogicaCMG, North America operations. DETROIT FREE PRESS COLUMNIST NEWMAN TO MC GALA

Detroit Free Press columnist and radio personality, Heather Newman, will be the Master of Ceremony at the Top Michigan Women in Computing award gala, to be held November 8, 2003 at the Novi Sheraton (formerly Hilton).

Newman has been writing a column on personal computers since 1995, which has appeared in newspapers around the country. In addition, her work has appeared in a variety of national magazines, including Family PC, Working Woman, Home Magazine, Home Office Computing, CNet and Woman's World. The Detroit Free Press has published a collection of her updated columns in the book PC@Home.

Newman appears frequently on local radio stations, PRI and NPR. She has trained thousands of journalists around the country on techniques for using computers to report and write better stories.

Gov. Granholm and Teri Takai, CIO of Michigan at Gala

Teri Takai has accepted our invitation to speak at the 2003 Top Michigan Women in Computing Gala along with Governor Granholm. This exciting event on November 8th honors top Michigan women in computing and kicks off the AWC-AA scholarship fund for women. Ms. Takai will join Governor Granholm in addressing the gala.

AWC Featured in Monster.com Article

Monster.com has posted a new article on AWC by Allan Hoffman, the Monster Tech Jobs Expert, entitled Tech Resource: The AWC, Association for Women in Computing.

Governor Granholm Invited Gala Keynote Speaker

Read a Book for July Book Club Event

Our second book discussion will be in July. The book we will be discussing is "Unlocking the Clubhouse" by Jane Margolis and Allan Fisher.

Bylaw Changes Affirmed

Voting on the change in member accounting and the creation of a VP of Students concluded on Jan. 10, 2003. With 20% of the members voting, both changes passed with a 95% majority.

The next step in the process of changing the bylaws is to send the proposed changes to the national board. If the national board approves, we will move ahead with the election of the VP of Students. We are beginning the work necessary to establish a scholarship. Our goal is to award as many scholarships as we can, with the amount and the elegibility to be determined. UM SI Women Join AWC

Rebecca Yoo, the VP of publicity for the Ann Arbor chapter, and a graduate student in the School of Information at UM has organized a group of women from SI who are banding together to form a subgroup of the Ann Arbor AWC. These young women will be members of the Ann Arbor chapter, but will also act independently by organizing and hosting events of particular interest to students.
