Vector Format information click here Why vector? - if you visit the above link you will see a graphic representation of the difference between raster and vector images. When a vector graphic is resized it maintains it's strong graphic content without pixelating. Because the logo will be used in a variety of ways (web, print, banners etc.) it is more effective to start with a vector graphic and alter as needed. Adobe Illustrator is the most common vector software. If you do not have this software - call your local community college and see if they have it on their computers or Macs in the public labs. Usually they do and you can usually use them for free as your tax dollars pay for community colleges. If you are in the Washtenaw area you can use the WCC computers/Macs for free in the library.
